Editor’s note: Dr. Ana Aslan’s use of procaine injections was one of the first anti-aging therapies of the post-World War II era. Its success has been well documented, and many of the world’s most famous politicians and celebrities—including John F. Kennedy, Nikita Khrushchev, Charlie Chaplin—traveled to Romania to obtain procaine therapy from Dr. Aslan’s clinic at the National Geriatric Institute.

When I was nutritional director at the Pritikin Longevity Center, I had the opportunity to speak with a number of distinguished persons—celebrities, CEOs, even former government officials and ambassadors—all of whom had traveled all over the world. In the course of their health histories, many of them casually mentioned that they had traveled to Romania to obtain Dr. Aslan’s procaine therapy.

I became intrigued by the glowing reports of the extraordinary results that they obtained from her therapy and began my own research into this amazing anti-aging therapy. From my own research of published medical articles and consultations with my Pritikin clients, I learned that patients receiving procaine therapy patients showed more desire to live; diminished depression and anxiety; increased physical and intellectual capacities; diminished body rigidity; better skin, hair and nail growth; fewer senile brown spots and skin growths; increased muscular strength and joint mobility; and faster healing of accidental fractures. Occasionally, users’ hair returned to a more youthful color. Most people also experienced mildly euphoric effects within one to three days of being given the injections.

Since I could not go to Romania to obtain the injection, I began corresponding with Dr. Aslan and learned that her procaine therapy was also beneficial when administered orally. Personal Experience with Procaine Therapy

I started taking the formula and found that the difference I felt was quite apparent in terms of my own emotional mental health. I experienced a 24-hour-a-day feeling of well-being, perhaps what one might even describe as mild euphoria.

Euphoria. It is the only way I can describe the feeling procaine users experience, and that feeling of euphoria is almost universally experienced. Delving Deeper into Biochemical Effects

As a nutritionist, I needed to figure out why I was feeling this wonderful mental energy. I had to know what it was about the procaine-based formula contributing to the effect. That was when I did a lot more research on procaine therapy, only to discover that alleviation of depression and improved mental well-being were well known to be the primary beneficial “side effects.”

As people grow old, the brain undergoes macroscopic, microscopic, biochemical and electrophysiological changes. The number of nerve cells goes down and changes in the cells occur that signify aging. Cognitive function begins its decline, and age-related senility and depression begin their rise around age 40, becoming even more apparent as one grows older. Biochemical changes of the neurotransmitting systems bring forth the metabolic changes that cause depression’s onset. In the presence of an old patient with cognitive impairments and changes of behavior, the health care professional faces a formidable challenge. Any depressive symptom may impair life’s quality, so a therapy is absolutely necessary. It was in helping to overcome brain dysfunction and age-related depression that procaine therapy seemed to be highly effective.

Researchers found that Aslan’s procaine-based formula acted upon the human body by normalizing acetylcholine synthesis and inhibiting monoamineoxidase (MAO). An enzyme, MAO causes the breakdown of neurotransmitters called monoamines, including primary brain neurotransmitters such as dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine. Dr. D.S. Robinson and colleagues reported in Lancet that starting around the age of 40, the level of MAO increase is directly related to the aging process and increased prevalence of depression.

That Gerovital-H3 had a certified antidepressive effect is thought to be due to its ability to normalize MAO levels. Dr. D.J. Hrachovec, reporting in 1972 in The Physiologist, published results of a comparative study showing that Gerovital-H3 had a normalizing effect on MAO levels.

Dr. M.D. McFarlane, reporting his findings in Lancet, proved the increasingly inhibitory action of procaine-based therapy upon MAO levels, ranging from 17.8 to 87.7 percent, depending on the dose administered. Dr. McFarlane also found the action to be safe since it was reversible.

In a double-blind study, Dr. William Zung from Duke University, North Carolina, applied procaine therapy treatment for 28 days on three groups of patients who suffered from depression. Using established psychological tests, Dr. Zung found that procaine therapy was beneficial in the treatment of depression.

In a 1996 double-blind study conducted on depressive patients, the anti-depressive effect of procaine therapy was also evaluated by means of psychiatric and psychological investigations. The tests showed a higher percentage of improvement for the procaine-treated patients, including lessening of depressed mood, fatigue, agitation, anxiety and hypochondriasis. Patients also experienced improved energy levels.

Recently, Mircea Dumitru, M.D., Ph.D., conducted an unpublished double-blind study on 50 patients with low, moderate and severe depression. After two series of treatments, the difference was statistically significant between the patients with procaine-based therapy and placebo. “The Hamilton score was constantly positive and the medium reduction was significant,” says Dr. Dumitru.

Unfortunately, in the late 1980s, my sources could no longer obtain the Aslan formula. I remained on the look out for other ways to get the formula so I could start using it again. I really missed those mental highs! But most of the products I tried were poor imitations of the original.

Then, in the late 1990s I was doing an article on depression and remembered how helpful Gerovital was and started to search again in earnest to find the successor, the next generation to the original Aslan formula.
